The Creation of Barbie
Ruth Handler invented the Barbie doll in 1959. She co-founded the toy company Mattel with her husband Elliot and Harold "Matt" Matson. The company, initially creating toy furniture, transitioned to manufacturing toys. Barbie made her debut at the American Toy Fair in New York City on March 9, 1959. Designed as an 11-inch tall doll with an adult figure, Barbie was intended to inspire girls with future aspirations, a departure from the baby and toddler dolls that were popular at the time.
The Naming of Barbie and Ken
Barbie was named after Handler’s daughter Barbara. She enjoyed playing with paper dolls, which influenced the concept of Barbie. In 1961, Barbie’s boyfriend Ken was introduced, taking his name from Handler’s son.
