The University of Utah is a public, coeducational research university in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. Officially accredited, the U offers courses and programs leading to bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctorate degrees. This 173-year-old institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students’ past academic records and grades.
In 1915, five faculty members were dismissed after a graduation speaker made a speech critical of mayor William Spry, which lead to one third of the faculty resigning in protest.
The school granted its first degree in 1886. In 1892 the name was changed to the University of Utah. In 1900 it relocated to East Bench. Today the student body numbers 33,000. Utah is associated with four Nobel laureates.
The campus is generally considered a safe place with its own police department and measures to promote safety like emergency phones throughout campus. However, incidents of crime can occur, so it is important to exercise caution.
Jewish Studies Initiative
The Jewish Studies Initiative allows students to explore Jewish tradition and history from ancient times to the present day. Course offerings focus on canonical sources, the Holocaust, diversity in the Diaspora, Zionism and Israel, secular Jewish literature and Judeo-Christian dialogue.
The mission is to educate and discover, refine and disseminate knowledge as a major teaching and research university. The U recognizes the mutual relevance of teaching and research as essential components of academic excellence.
Utah Asia Campus
The Utah Asia Campus is ready to accept the Salt Lake City campus’ systems one by one. Less than five years after opening it is clear that UAC is not ready to open a department of religious studies or hold lectures about religion.
Mormon Studies Initiative
The Mormon Studies initiative began in 2010. It has engaged the community and fostered academic scholarship on Mormonism.
