What is an Actor?
An actor is a person who acts in a movie, television show, play, or radio show. Actors are also known as ‘thespians’.
Laurence Olivier
Laurence Olivier is known for dominating the stage in the 20th century. He later moved to films, establishing himself as one of the world’s leading movie stars.
Blocking in Acting
The way actors’ bodies help to tell the story is a direct result of blocking. Blocking is the planned physical motions of actors that aid the storyline, convey subtext, and focus the audience’s attention. It is used early in rehearsals.
Actors and Roles
- If actors forget their lines, the prompter cues them.
- Each scene is different, so actors can’t play their role over and over.
- Actors who can’t fix mistakes may not be asked back.
Theater Terminology
- The seats closest to the stage are called the orchestra.
- Actors who regularly perform together may be called a troupe or repertory company.
Types of Actors
- Background actors appear in non-speaking roles, often in the background.
- Series regulars have contracts tying them to a TV series.
- Recurring actors frequently guest star.
- Guest stars play a central role in one episode.
- Co-stars/day players have small roles.
- Cameos are brief appearances by well-known performers.
