What Is a Star ID in Alabama? New Identification Requirements for U.S. Air Travel

All passengers traveling domestically by air will be required to provide a REAL ID compatible license or identity card (STAR ID) or another acceptable form of identification beginning on May 3, 2023, to fly within the U.S. The STAR ID costs $23.50, the same price as an Alabama driver’s license. It will replace your driver’s license and must be renewed every four years. More information may be found at www.dps.alabama.gov.

Appearance and Fees

The STAR ID will be similar in appearance to a conventional driver’s license, with the exception of a star at the top of the card. STAR IDs are issued to qualified individuals only at ALEA Driver License Exam offices for $36.25 — fees are subject to change.

Requirements and Verification

You must present an acceptable ID, such as a valid passport, state-issued enhanced driver’s license or U.S. military ID, to fly within the U.S. You will not be allowed to fly if your identity cannot be verified.

When you apply for an Alabama STAR ID, you must provide documents to prove your identity, date of birth, Social Security number, and principal residence address as listed on the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency website.

Alabama’s STAR ID program complies with the federal REAL ID Act, which established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.

STAR IDs are issued only by State Employees at Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Driver License exam offices. You cannot apply for a STAR ID by mail or online.

You have until May 2023 to get your official STAR ID in Alabama to travel by plane or visit most federal facilities. The STAR ID has a gold star in the top left-hand corner certifying that the license holder has complied with Alabama’s requirements under the REAL-ID Act of 2005.
