Snow Plow Thefts and Safety
The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is investigating the theft of a Meyer brand yellow 7.5 feet wide snow plow. The plow was stolen from Kool-Vent heating and cooling on B-Line Road. The theft occurred overnight October 22 to October 23, 2017. Anyone with information should contact the Petawawa Detachment or Pembroke/Renfrew County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Do you need a license to plow snow Ontario?

The only way passing would be permitted is if a full lane is available to complete the manoeuvre safely. In order for a lane to be considered available, no part of a snow plow, including an attachment or blade, should overlap.

Snow Plow Operation Safety Measures
Do not attempt to pass a snowplow on the right. Snowplows are usually steered to the right so they can discharge snow onto the shoulder or sidewalk.
- Do: Drive as far to the right side of the road as (safely) possible when a snow plow is approaching in the opposite direction.
- Don’t: Assume the snow plow operator can see you.
- Do: Give the snow plow operator a wave when they pull over to let you pass.
“It is now illegal to pass snowplows working side by side on Ontario highways. Only pass a snowplow if the lane is completely clear of any part of the plow, including its blade,” says Sargeant Kerry Schmidt, Ontario Provincial Police.

If you expect snow accumulation of greater than one inch, plan on plowing. Maintain a safe following distance behind the snowplow. It is safer to stay well back until the snowplow operator can safely move over to allow vehicles to pass. Never pass a snow plow!
For your safety, stay a safe distance behind snowplows. A snowplow typically travels under 35 miles per hour. Do not follow too closely behind a snowplow; stay at least 200 feet behind it. Never pass a snowplow on the right.
If the snow is heavy, the force of the snow coming off the plow is enough to dent a mailbox or even loosen a post. If your mailbox is hit, call your local HOA or local municipality.
