Purpose of a PVC Cleanout
A plumbing cleanout provides access to a building’s drain pipes. You can remove its cap to clear clogs and debris. Most local codes require installing cleanouts when constructing a building.
Septic Clean Out Pipe
The septic clean out pipe sticks from the ground between the house and the septic tank. It contains a removable cap. If there is a backup, the clog could be in the septic system or between the cleanout and tank.
Cleanout Installation and Maintenance
- Clean-out plugs can seal with pipe tape or pipe dope.
- To remove under a sink, use a wrench or pliers to unscrew it from the P-trap.
- Capture spilled water with a bucket beneath.
- Turn plug counterclockwise to remove, replace, tighten clockwise.
- Choose an appropriate clean-out pipe type and size. PVC is commonly used residentially for durability and ease. Ensure it’s long enough to extend above the ground. Connect it to the main sewer line using a Y-shaped fitting or sanitary tee.
