Background of Karate
Karate originated in Okinawa, Japan. It was influenced by Chinese martial arts. Karate utilizes punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes with open hands. It focuses on self-defense and mental discipline. Originally called "Chinese hand," its name was changed to "empty hand" when adapted in Japan. This signifies practicing without weapons.

There are three main karate styles:
- Shotokan: uses linear, powerful techniques.
