To qualify for the Ohio homestead exemption, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be an Ohio resident who is at least 65 years old
- Be under 65 and disabled with physician and/or psychologist certification
- Be at least 59 years old and a surviving spouse of someone who previously qualified
Now, Ohio is returning to the originally approved system of applying income testing to determine eligibility. Seniors with total household incomes under $34,200 per year qualify for the exemption.
- Amount: $25,000
- Tax Savings: This exemption means you’ll be taxed as if your home’s value was $25,000 less. For example, a $100,000 home would be taxed as if it were worth $75,000.
