State Tax Filing Guidelines
New Mexico’s law requires filing a state tax return if you have income from New Mexico sources and must file a federal return. File to claim a refund of state taxes withheld using form PIT-1. You can order forms by phone or from over 100 libraries. File electronically by April 30 to extend the deadline. Refunds for electronic returns take 6 to 8 weeks versus 8 to 12 weeks for paper.
Tax Remittance for Employees
You must collect and remit income tax if you have employees. Quarterly wage reports are due on form ES-903A. The 2020 tax rate ranges up to 9.0625% depending on location. Sales tax returns must be filed once you have a permit.
Extensions and Payments
New Mexico recognizes a federal automatic six-month extension. File using form PIT-EXT to extend the deadline if you filed federal Form 4868. Interest accrues even with an extension. It is not required to file a state extension with a federal one. If tax is due, pay to avoid interest from the original deadline. To request more time, submit form RPD-41096.
