Smart Watch Crafting

Retro Watch is open source to make a smart watch with Arduino and Android. This text explains modules, blueprints, install and codes.

Watch Assembly Courses

Two longer courses allow you to design and assemble your own watch for CHF 1,990. Horologist Fabiano Pericles was my mentor for the day.

If you want to assemble your own watch to see what it’s like, I recommend the TimeZone Watch School for $200 tuition, plus $400 in parts. You can have an ETA-based handwind watch. Please add suggestions. Let us know if you’ve made your own!

Selecting Watch Components

Mechanical watches are more expensive than quartz watches. Movements production is technology. A man needs four watches: a dress watch for formal occasions, a sports watch for activities.

Kits for less than $20 will do fine but they are not durable. Swiss tools from Bergeon if you have money. Choose your movement so everything is compatible. Cases, dials, hands fit specific movements. NH35 is a budget choice.

Qualifies as making your own watch doing everything except the movement yourself. You can buy parts from AD or manufacturer.

Building High-Quality DIY Watches

No one wants to wear a DIY watch that screams DIY. So we created this DIY mechanical watch with beautiful lines, refined designs, and components that impress. In fact, after you successfully make your own watch with our kit, you will be able to use the same tools to service or even repair some of your other watches.

Bespoke Watch Making

With a little research on the internet, some mechanical know-how, and a fair bit of patience, you can build your very own bespoke watch. For this watch, I used an ETA 6497 movement, which has its second hand located at the 9 o’clock position.

Cost Considerations for Custom Watches

The cost to make a custom logo watch varies. For middle-end markets, use medium quality watch parts; for high-end, use high-quality parts, which will affect the price accordingly.

The Longevity of Mechanical Watches

Mechanical watches can last for decades, depending on the type and how often you get the watch serviced. Quartz watches require less frequent servicing, but their gaskets wear out over time.

The Writing Process for Professionals

The development process for a professional writer could take anywhere between six months to a year, on average, to write a script for a 2-hour movie.

Exploring Mechanical Watchmaking

As I’m getting into watches and watchmaking, I’d love to learn more about mechanical watches and their inner workings. Does anyone know of any DIY kits that allow you to build your own mechanical watch/movement?

Innovation in Watchmaking

Cracking the shell of the 3D-printed metal mechanical watch movement could change the economics and power bases of today’s luxury wristwatch industry. Back in 2014, I became excited by the work of watchmaker and software engineer Nicholas Manousos, who 3D-printed the Tourbillon 1000%.

Mechanical Watches vs Digital Watches

It is possible to have a microprocessor send signals to mechanical devices that make hands move on the watch face, creating an analog display.

The Art of Handmade Watches

The finishing touches are what we usually refer to in modern "handmade" watches. Many traditional movement decorations and finishes that were the mark of the finest timepieces can be reproduced today by automatic or semi-automatic machinery.

Understanding Mechanical Watches

A mechanical watch is powered by energy stored inside a tightly wound balance wheel. It converts kinetic energy from the movement of the wearer’s hands, storing that energy into the mainspring to be sent into the watch.

Whether a mechanical watch can be overwound or not is a contentious issue. Modern watches build tension as the mainsprings get wound, indicating a fully wound watch. Overwinding requires excessive force and is highly unlikely.
