Florida imposes a general state sales tax rate of 6% on sales and purchases of items, services, and rentals. Other rates may apply in Florida for specific items like amusement machine receipts, commercial property leases, and electricity.
Tax Holidays and Events
- The tax holiday runs for 14 days, from July 24 through Aug. 6, 2023, saving shoppers $69.4 million in state and local taxes.
- Florida’s tax-free Freedom Summer event runs from May 29 to Sept. 4 and waives purchases.
- Florida Freedom Week, started in 2021, aims to stimulate the economy post-pandemic.
Exempt Items in Florida
- During tax-free weekends, the 6% sales tax is waived on eligible items like personal computers or accessories purchased for noncommercial home use with a sales price of $1,500 or less.
- Food and meals in Florida are subject to sales tax, and use tax is charged if taxable items are bought without paying sales tax at purchase or brought into Florida from out of state without paying sales tax at the time of purchase.
