Framing Artwork on Paper
Any drawing, painting or print made on paper is obviously very delicate. Therefore a drawing should be framed behind glass to protect it. My favourite for framing is “semi-gloss” or “Lustre” paper – which has a slightly textured glossy surface – a bit like old silver-halide “Wedding paper”. The Lustre finish has a more pronounced texture. A drawing should also be framed with a mount, which is a piece of thin card with an aperture cut in it to reveal the artwork. While the color of each mat picks up on the colors in each drawing, the mats should not be too dark or too ‘heavy’ in hue.
Framing Charcoal or Pastel Drawings
It is best to get a professional to frame a charcoal or pastel drawing as they need careful handling. Although I spray my drawings with two protective layers of fixative, they can easily smudge if handled incorrectly.
Choosing the Right Frame
Before you go shopping, consider the style that will enhance your artwork without overpowering it. For predominantly warm colored artworks like red, choose gold frames. For black and white drawings, choose black or silver frames. For light-colored paintings, choose a light natural wood or stained frame.
