Pumpkin Production and Sales in the United States
Over 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkin are produced each year in the United States. The top pumpkin-producing states are Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and California. Most pumpkins are sold during October.
Global Pumpkin Production and Consumption
China produces the most pumpkins worldwide with over 8 million tonnes per year while India produces over 5 million tonnes. A good yield for a pumpkin farm is about 1,000 pumpkins per acre. It’s estimated that over 1 billion pounds of pumpkin are wasted in America each year. In the U.S., the per capita consumption of fresh pumpkins was about 6 pounds in 2020.
Pumpkin Market and Exports
U.S. pumpkin exports were valued at $777 million in 2022, with Spain, Mexico, Turkey, the Netherlands, and the U.S. being the top exporters. Over 3 million pumpkins are estimated to be sold just for Halloween decorations each year.
