Overview of Car Breaker Yards
A car breaker yard is where old, broken or end-of-life cars and vans are collected, stripped, resold, broken down or destroyed. Breakers strip valuable parts like engines and catalytic converters to resell. The unusable vehicles and parts left are compressed and sold as scrap.
Licensing and Permits
To legally break up cars, you need a breakers licence and a depollution licence. Getting set up can take months. Before starting a breaker business, consult municipal authorities for necessary permits. Contact the Environment Agency to apply for an ELV permit to become an Authorised Treatment Facility. You also need a Waste Management License and Waste Carriers License. Certificates of Destruction track that products are safely disposed of.
Insurance Requirements
As a breaker yard owner, you need insurance to protect against claims by customers, accidents onsite, etc. Typical breakers yard insurance includes road risks, recovery of vehicles, high coverage for equipment and machinery. Breaking cars can be profitable but requires proper authorisations.
