Is Cineplex Only in Canada? Company Profile

Cineplex Inc., formerly known as Cineplex Galaxy Income Fund and Galaxy Entertainment Inc., is a Canadian entertainment company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario.

The company was formed in 1984 when Cineplex Corporation purchased and merged with Canadian Odeon Theatres. Canadian Odeon Theatres itself was a merger between Canadian Theatres and Odeon Theatres of Canada in 1978.

Cineplex Entertainment operates over 170 theatres across all 10 Canadian provinces with over 1,600 screens. In the United States, these theatres are operated by AMC Theatres.

Cineplex Entertainment is recognized as having one of Canada’s most admired corporate cultures. It employs over 10,000 people. Cineplex is a proud partner of SCENE, Canada’s largest entertainment loyalty program.

Cineplex controls about 75% of the theatres in Canada with different brands including Cineplex Odeon Cinemas and Scotiabank Theatres. In December 2019, Cineplex agreed to be acquired by Cineworld Group for $2.8 billion but Cineworld abandoned the sale in 2020 due to breaches of the sale terms.

Recently, Cineplex entered a distribution agreement with Lionsgate to bring the studio’s 2023 slate of 11 movies, including John Wick: Chapter 4, to Cineplex venues across Canada.
