Who Started Mobil Oil?

Company History

Following the break-up of Standard Oil in 1911, the "Standard Oil Company of New York" (or ‘Socony’) was founded. In 1920, the company registered the name "Mobiloil" as a trademark. Henry Clay Folger was head of the company until 1923, when Herbert L. Pratt succeeded him. Mobil began in 1866 when Matthew Ewing, a carpenter in Rochester, New York, devised a way of distilling crude oil in a vacuum to make kerosene (paraffin oil) and lubricants for horse-drawn carriages. In 1879 the company was bought by John D. Rockefeller, who made it part of his Standard Oil Trust in 1882. In 1931 Vacuum and Socony merged to boost oil and petrol sales. The company was renamed Mobil in 1966.

In 1999, Mobil and Exxon merged and formed ExxonMobil which still operates. The Mobil manufacturer name has been kept on most products.
