Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to treat various conditions. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes acupuncture as effective for several diseases and symptoms. However, additional research is still needed.
Treatment Procedure
During treatment, needles are inserted at precise body locations to alleviate symptoms, relieve pain, or treat illness. Sessions usually involve lying still while approximately five to twenty needles are inserted for 10-20 minutes. The FDA classifies acupuncture needles as medical devices.
Efficacy and Safety
Research continues to demonstrate acupuncture’s efficacy for numerous conditions. The WHO recognizes 28 conditions for which acupuncture has proven effective. However, acupuncture has some contraindications and should not be used by all patients. An appropriate practitioner should be chosen depending on one’s needs and health history.
