Do You Need a Water Tank to Pressure Wash? Water Tank Considerations for Pressure Washers

Choosing the Right Size

What size water tank do I need? For mobile car detailing, 5 gallons per application is enough. For home pressure washing, get a 300-350 liter tank for light cleaning or double that for heavy duty cleaning. Position the tank higher than the washer so water flows down via gravity.

Maintaining Water Flow

You can attach a compatible tank to any pressure washer. This gives a constant water flow that prevents damage. The tank improves portability, water conservation, and cost savings. Tanks come in various sizes from large stationary to compact portable sizes.

Open the valve so water flows when the power switch is on. Set the pressure then start. Afterwards, close valve and switch, then disconnect hoses and couplings.

Handling Water Pressure

With a tank, you avoid relying on unpredictable water pressure for cleaning. Gravity feed is fine if the source delivers over 1 gallon per minute at 20+ PSI. Otherwise, use a pump. Even with low water pressure, a pressure washer works by making its own pressure. Choose a wider diameter hose if the supply pressure is low.

Do not let it idle as heat builds up. Power washers use hot water for better cleaning. Use the property’s water if it has adequate flow and supply.
