Red rot on a trumpet is a deterioration affecting certain manufacturers of brass instruments. It causes red powdery deposits that eat holes in the metal over time. The condition particularly impacts vintage and antique trumpets. Red rot occurs due to chemical reactions between compounds in the air and certain alloys found in some instrument metals. It can weaken structural integrity. There are restoration processes to mitigate damage, but red rot is an ongoing vulnerability issue for susceptible antique brass instruments.
Identification and Causes of Red Rot
How do you identify red rot? Red rot describes the corrosion of brass, much like rust with iron and steel. It is red (or pink) in colour, and it is the structural deterioration of the brass that is deeper than the surface – hence ‘rot’. If it is localized then you may be able to patch the part and extend its serviceable life. Otherwise, the part must be replaced. Red rot is caused by prolonged storage or exposure to high relative humidity, environmental pollution, and high temperature.
Controlling Sugarcane Red Rot Disease
As the disease advances the red colour spreads to the surrounding tissues extending through many internodes and irregular discoloured blotches are formed, which may be reddish or yellowish or white with red margins. The best way to control red rot is to select setts for planting from healthy plants in a disease-free area.
