Can a Locksmith Identify a Key?

Car Key Creation Process

Professional locksmiths have the skills and equipment to create car keys. The locksmith identifies the make, model, and year of the vehicle first. Using software, key blanks and requirements for that vehicle are identified.

Key Identification and Duplication

To replace car keys using the vehicle’s VIN, proof of ownership must be provided to the locksmith. The locksmith provides the VIN and customer information to obtain a key code. This is then used to cut a new key. Key codes have five or six digits corresponding to the lock’s pin chambers.

Key Matching and Cutting

Keys can be matched with locks until the right fit is found. The key-cutting equipment resembles a mini mechanical or laser cutting tool. The unique VIN provides the code to cut the blank into an original key duplicate.

Keys are identified by their grooves and shapes. Colored keys may have color coatings over their base material.

Key Identification Techniques

If a found key’s origin is unknown, impressioning marks may provide clues under UV light. Key shape and deformation can also indicate its purpose. Damaged or cracked keys can reveal depth using a micrometer, determining if it fits a certain lock type.
