Getting Your EIN Verification Letter
To get form 147C, contact the IRS Business and Specialty Tax line at 1-800-829-4933. They can send it by fax or mail. Form 147C is an IRS letter verifying a company’s Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as an EIN verification letter.
Who is Eligible to Request Form 147C?
The form can only be requested by company owners or someone with Power of Attorney. To appoint a Power of Attorney, complete IRS Form 2848.
Different Ways to Acquire Your EIN Information
- By Phone: Call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at 1-800-829-4933 to request the 147c letter, which is free. The line operates from 7 AM – 7 PM, Monday – Friday, local taxpayer time. Note that the busiest day for IRS calls is Monday.
- By Mail: Sending a written request takes 4-6 weeks for delivery, so calling is generally faster.
- Online Searches: For public companies, EINs can be searched on the SEC’s EDGAR system. For other entities, checking existing documents or contacting your bank are recommended methods.
