Name Change Process
You can’t change your first name or invent a new name on your passport. To use a different name, you must legally change your name. Remember, the name on tickets must match the passport. -
Application Process
Apply for a passport name change as soon as possible after your legal name change. If your passport is less than one year old, you can change your name for free. If more than one year old, you must renew your passport and pay a fee. Expedited service takes 2-3 weeks but costs more. -
Cost and Forms
The Passport Office charges full price to change a name. If less than one year has passed, use form DS-5504 with no fee. If more than one year has passed, use Form DS-82. Enclose the $140 fee. Confirm eligibility before proceeding.
American citizens are required to travel with a passport that has their current legal name. If your name changed due to marriage, apply for a passport name change before you travel.
