No, ProctorU does not have the access to check for other devices while in use. ProctorU authenticates the test taker’s identity, to be certain it is monitoring the correct student, it observes the student through the webcam (which is connected to a live person), therefore, watching the student at the location as well as what’s happening on the screen. Due to these restrictions, the test taker cannot reach assistance from outside or use smart devices. However, ProctorU cannot verify whether are there any other devices on the students’ network or not. This means there may be ways to cheat. For instance, if the HDM cable is connected to the test-taking laptop and another monitor outside, ProctorU cannot spot it. In this case, someone from the outside might be able to pass answers to the test taker. It is possible to cheat but due to the monitoring capabilities of ProctorU it would be very, very difficult.
What is a ProctorU?
ProctorU is basically an online platform that is used during virtual exams for students. It monitors the student through the computer’s webcam, speakers and microphone. As mentioned earlier, there is a live person observing through the webcam and is not only monitoring, but can also offer guidance during the test. ProctorU ensures that students are not cheating during their exams to maintain the integrity of the test for all students. The three ways ProctorU does this are:
– Verifies the actual identity of the exam participant to make sure it is the correct student.
– Watches the exam taker carefully through the webcam and verify there is no one assisting the student in any way.
– Observes the screen in real-time to ensure the student is doing the exam correctly both in their physical location and on the computer screen without leaving, while the test is in progress.
