Age Limit and Career Change Possibility
40 isn’t ridiculously old to get your first Chef de cuisine job as a professional cook. The average age of male Chefs & head cooks in the workforce is 40. Last year, just over 17 percent of chefs and head cooks were black. Escoffier graduate and winner of the prestigious Cochon 555 competition, Lance McWhorter, for example, got serious about cooking after his military service, and didn’t become a chef or attend culinary school until he was in his 40s. Becoming a restaurant chef can require long hours on your feet.
Career as a Chef After 30
On the other hand, the emotional satisfaction that accompanies my job is non-existant. I used to help run a friend’s restaurant, so I’m somewhat aware of what I’d be getting myself into in terms of the enormous pay cut and the hours worked. I could live with those consequences, but what I’m concerned about is whether I’m realistically too old to start over and have any measure of sucess. There are no specific age limits for starting a culinary career and many people choose to enter the profession late in life. However, the learning curve can be very steep as being a chef is not comparable to any other job role. Becoming a chef after 30 is absolutely possible. It is never too late to go to culinary school and start a new career path.
Opportunities and Success in Culinary Arts
Everything you have learned, done, and tried in the past has taught you what works, what doesn’t, and what you really want to do with your life. It’s never too late to start a new career. Is a Chef’s Life Hard?
It is physically demanding. Professional kitchen work – whether it’s in a restaurant, catering business, or school setting – is incredibly rigorous. Building experience is key to making a successful career as a chef. This means working in different kitchens and learning from different chefs. The more experience you have, the more opportunities you’ll have to advance in your career. It may take several years of experience and training before one can be considered a chef, and the competition to pursue a career in the culinary arts is fierce.
