The best way for clients to get the most out of their property is by leveling a sloped yard. Slopes make the space unusable. By creating a level lawn, the area to work on or enjoy is maximized.
Outline your plot with stakes and string to create a boundary for the area to be leveled. Hammer stakes into the ground at each corner.
Tools and Techniques for Hand Grading
To grade by hand, start by assessing the land and determining slope and drainage. Next, remove excess soil and rocks to create an even surface. Use a rake or grading board to level, constantly checking for accuracy. Finally, compact the soil to ensure stability.
Tips for Efficient Hand Grading
Pushing a lawn grade of over 25 percent can cause erosion and runoff. The easiest way to determine if you have a grading issue is to look for drainage issues and standing water.
Keep in mind there are many ways to go about grading by hand. I’m going to explain one way:
