Can You Have More Than One EIN Number?
- Yes. As long as each EIN is for a separate business entity, a person may apply for multiple EINs. Request one EIN at a time and not on the same day.
What Happens If You Have Multiple EIN Numbers?
- Contact the IRS. They will likely tell you to use one number for your business dealings and disregard the other. Having two causes confusion and makes it difficult for the IRS to track your business.
Applying for and Managing EINs:
- An EIN is required to file and pay taxes and correspond to the IRS. Once an EIN has been issued to an entity, it becomes the permanent federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. EINs do not expire.
How Many EINs Can I Have?
- A sole proprietor can only be issued one EIN. Other business entities can have an unlimited number of EINs.
Running Multiple Businesses:
- It is not possible to use the same EIN for different entity types or for unrelated businesses. Separate EINs are required for businesses taxed differently.
