Do Boats in Michigan Have Titles? Michigan Boat Titling Requirements

In Michigan, boats over 20 feet or with a motor must have a title. It costs $5 to title a boat.

Exemptions from Titling

The following boats do not need a Michigan title:

  • Boats registered out-of-state using Michigan waters temporarily
  • Government-owned boats
  • Documented boats
  • Boats under 20 feet without a motor

Historical Perspective

In 1977, the State Department of Michigan started awarding titles for several types of watercraft. At the time of sale, a title is required for:

  • Any and all watercraft that are twenty feet in length or more
  • Any and all watercraft that have an engine that is permanently attached, regardless of how long the watercraft is

Watercraft not required to be titled may be titled upon the request of the owner.

Registration vs. Titling

Canoes and kayaks that are not powered by an engine do not need to be registered, regardless of their length. However, sailboats are required to be registered.
