Evolution of the Butler Profession
And although those butlers do still exist, times have changed. The Butler profession has developed and evolved with it! A Butler is still very relevant in modern society. They might look a little different, and have some different tasks. To understand the role of a modern butler, let’s first look at the traditional Butler, its tasks, and how they now differ. There are quite some households that prefer a Traditional Butler. This type has not completely vanished! They still have a place and are relevant in modern society.
Today, Highclere is home to the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, owners of the ‘real’ Downton Abbey house. Yet, some households have hired females to serve as the homes’ butlers. Modern butlers still perform duties like: Serving as Household Manager and Overseeing Maintenance and Upkeep of the Home. I would assume you’d need to apply to some high end service company who places staff like chefs, maids, drivers, assistants, and butlers.
Persistence and Demand
Many of the great houses of England prevail. And the demand for a butler, housekeeper, cook, and driver has never faded in certain pockets of England. Billionaires often do fine fending for themselves. But they have dog walkers, maids, assistants, butlers, and drivers for monotonous chores. While butlers do get days off, they were always on call. There are now many people working in service, and no shortage of families wanting to hire staff. But in London that probably has to do with the sheer number of wealthy people arriving to set up new homes.
