Septic Tank Registration and Costs
Do I have to register my septic tank? All domestic waste water treatment systems, including septic tanks, must be registered with your local authority. There is a fee of €50 to register your waste water treatment system. You can register and pay online.
Grants and Maintenance
From 1 January 2024, the septic tank grant will increase from €5,000 to €12,000. This new grant rate is an increase of €7,000. Experts recommend homeowners get their septic tanks pumped every 3 to 5 years; some tanks may last 10 years before pumping is necessary. In Ireland, a septic tank cost is approximately €950.
If your septic tank discharges to surface water, you will need to upgrade your system or install a soakaway system by 1 January 2020.
Replacement and Installation Costs
Replacing a septic tank costs $3,000 to $10,000. Expect to pay $4,000 on average for a new one, including installation. The larger the tank, the more it will cost.
Installing a new septic system with excavation costs $4,500 to $20,000 and takes 1 to 2 weeks depending on size, site, and weather conditions.
Lifespan of Septic Tanks
A septic tank is an underground container that treats wastewater through decomposition and drainage. A concrete septic tank will last 40 to 50 years, but can last nearly indefinitely under the right conditions. A plastic or fiberglass septic tank will last 30 – 40 years, and with proper maintenance, they could last up to 50 years.
Proper maintenance should extend the lifespan of your septic tank as much as possible. Septic tanks that are cared for properly have been known to last more than 50 years.
Other Considerations
The drain field is sized based on the number of bedrooms. Signs it is time to repair or replace your septic system include if it is older than 30-40 years and needs frequent pump outs.
