Electric Bicycle Regulations in India
In India, conventional bicycles do not require a license to operate. Electric bicycles with a top speed of up to 25 km/h, typically powered by 250w motors, are very common. The Motor Vehicles Act 1988 exempts electric motorcycles with 250w motors from requiring a driver’s license. However, any two-wheeler exceeding these restrictions will require a license.
Low-Speed Electric Bikes (LSEBs) and High-Speed Electric Bikes (HSEBs)
According to Indian traffic laws, LSEBs have under 250W power and a maximum speed of under 25km/h. These e-bikes do not require a license. HSEBs, reaching speeds of up to 45 km/h, need a motorcycle license, registration, and insurance to operate.
License Requirements for Riding Electric Bikes
It is mandatory to possess a driver’s license for E-bikes on Indian roads if the engine power exceeds 250 watts. Electric bikes with 250w motors do not require vehicle registration. Riders should follow traffic rules and wear helmets accordingly.
Insurance Considerations
E-scooters with a maximum speed of 25 kilometers and under 250 watts power do not require a license. However, not having insurance can lead to legal issues. Insurance is crucial as accidents with e-bikes can result in injury or property damage.
