- Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) – Star Wars: The Force Awakens passed $2 billion in gross earnings within 54 days. To this day it remains the highest-grossing domestic release ever.

As movie budgets continue to climb and overseas markets grow, more and more blockbusters are likely to reach this rarified territory in the future. But adjusted for inflation, classics like Gone with the Wind still rank among the most successful films ever made financially.

Avatar, directed by James Cameron, is the highest grossing movie of all time, having a lifetime gross of over $2.9 billion. The 2009 science fiction film follows Jake Sully, who is sent to Pandora, a moon, as part of the Avatar program. Along the way, Jake becomes conflicted protecting the Na’vi people and their home. A sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water," was released in 2022.
