- Avatar (2009) – $2.899 billion – after its 2022 release bumped it up.
- Avengers: Endgame (2019) – It held the record for highest-grossing movie ever for a decade before finally being overtaken by 2019.
- Titanic (1997) – $2.207 billion (not counting the millions it will doubtlessly make after its 4K HDR 3D rerelease this year).
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) – Star Wars: The Force Awakens passed $2 billion in gross earnings within 54 days. To this day it remains the highest-grossing domestic release ever.
- Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
- Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Additional movies that have crossed $1 billion worldwide include Jurassic World (2015), The Lion King (2019), Frozen 2 (2019), and Joker (2019).
Record Breakers and Historical Hits
‘Released in 2018, the character’s first live-action solo feature earned $335 million domestically, while bringing in a tidal wave of cash overseas to the tune of $813.4 million All told, the movie earned $1.148 billion making it the highest-grossing DC movie ever.
As movie budgets continue to climb and overseas markets grow, more and more blockbusters are likely to reach this rarified territory in the future. But adjusted for inflation, classics like Gone with the Wind still rank among the most successful films ever made financially.
Highest Grossing Movie
Avatar, directed by James Cameron, is the highest grossing movie of all time, having a lifetime gross of over $2.9 billion. The 2009 science fiction film follows Jake Sully, who is sent to Pandora, a moon, as part of the Avatar program. Along the way, Jake becomes conflicted protecting the Na’vi people and their home. A sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water," was released in 2022.
