An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a unique nine-digit number issued by the IRS to identify a business entity. Obtaining an EIN is free and relatively simple.
How to Apply for an EIN
You can apply for an EIN immediately online or by telephone. The online application is available Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern time. Once submitted, the information is validated, and an EIN is issued immediately. By telephone, call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at (800) 829-4933 between 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday. Provide the required information, and an assistor will assign the EIN and provide it over the telephone.
If applying by mail using Form SS-4, allow about 4 weeks for processing. You can also fax the completed form and receive a response in about one week.
Usage of an EIN
The EIN is used for filing business taxes, hiring employees, opening business bank accounts, and obtaining licenses and permits. It is a vital identification number for any business entity, whether a start-up or an established corporation.
EINs do not expire once issued.
