Obtaining Stock Ownership Records
To obtain stock ownership records, you can reach out to either your broker or the transfer agent and registrar of the stock, like Computershare Trust Company for Tesla.
- If you bought shares through a broker, they will have your name and the number of shares purchased.
- Shares do not expire, and old certificates may hold value to collectors for their artwork.
Replacing Lost Stock Certificates
Different procedures exist for replacing lost stock certificates based on location:
- In the UK (for sole shareholders with shares worth under £10,000): Use the Telephone Express Service.
- In India: Obtain a lost certificate document from the Tahsildar.
- In the US: Contact the transfer agent or company share registrar for a replacement.
Electronic Records and Requesting Paper Certificates
Electronic records have simplified proving ownership, but paper certificates can still be requested from companies and brokers for a fee.
