Starting a Montana LLC
To start a Montana LLC, file the Articles of Organization. The fee is $70. You can file online through the Montana Secretary of State’s website. The Articles require: your LLC’s name, your registered agent’s name and address, and the purpose for forming the LLC. After approval, obtain an employer tax ID number from the Department of Revenue if you plan to have employees. You may also need business licenses depending on your industry. Continuing requirements include filing annual reports and paying fees by April 15 each year.
Obtaining Copies of Articles of Organization
Obtain copies of your articles by logging into your ePass Montana account. Search for your business name, click “Request Information”, then select “Certified Copies of Documents”. The fee for certified copies is $10.
Amending, Dissolving, and Additional Information
- To amend, log into your ePass account, search for your business name, click “Filing Actions”, then choose “Amendment” to complete the form. The filing fee is $15.
- To dissolve, follow your Montana LLC Operating Agreement. Close your business tax accounts. File Articles of Dissolution.
- The Secretary of State office has gone completely digital to make LLC formation easier. To get started, log on to ePass Montana and create an account. Select Articles of Organization for Domestic Limited Liability Company.
