Trail Names on the PCT
I got my name, Zapatos, on day 2. It was shortened to Zaps or Z. I’m obsessed with shoes. I helped people pick out new shoes. Eventually I learned to track footprints.

The PCT is well marked, simple 95% of the time. We carried maps and a phone app.
Thirty-three places have permit systems. Typically Wilderness, permits protect the area. Information is on our permit page.
The trail is generally well marked to standard. Signage is minimal, at junctions and roads.
Getting Your Trail Name
How do people get their trail names? Trail names come from fellow hikers after spending time together on the trail. The name often relates to a funny story, a piece of gear, or some physical trait that makes the hiker stand out. While trail names are common on long-distance hikes, they’re optional – some prefer to use their real names.
Trail Name Selection
You can’t fully prepare without thru-hiking experience. But take practice hikes with a full pack, or use the stairmaster, to get in better shape. It will help once you’re out there.
Keep things like enthusiasm and storytelling in mind for the full experience. Sharing the name’s origin can be part of the fun long after the hike.
