What is an EIN?
An EIN is a unique nine-digit number assigned by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It’s crucial for multiple purposes, known commonly as the business equivalent of a Social Security Number.
How to Find Your EIN?
You can call the IRS to search for your EIN by calling the Business & Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933 during IRS Business hours: 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5).
Verifying EIN and Application Process
To verify a company’s EIN, search SEC filings or ask the company. The EIN is listed with the title I.R.S. Employer Identification Number on recent 10-Q or 10K forms.
You may apply for an EIN online if located in the US. You are limited to one EIN per responsible party per day. Your business name closely resembling another is a reason to be denied an EIN.
All business EINs are public information. The unique nine-digit EIN number allows the IRS to identify businesses for tax reporting. Business owners will usually need an EIN when they file business tax returns, open a business bank account, and apply for business permits and licenses.
