Naming and Labeling
Choose a bold name to stand out from the crowd. Don’t be afraid to break the rules or be provocative.
Your art labels should include your name, object title, and media/support/technique at a minimum.
Think about the message you want to convey. Titles can add a new dimension to art.
Artwork Presentation & Sales
For prints or paintings, set up tables and place baskets to display art. Suspend hooks or use a pegboard frame with S hooks to hang paintings. Remember limited space.
Explain the meaning of your art, not just the visuals.
Titling Artwork & Series
Naming Your Artwork – Tips for Fine Artists
- Tip #1: Keep it simple and keep it short.
- Tip #2: Make your titles descriptive but not too personal.
- Tip #3: Include the name of the place when naming a painting of a particular location.
Titles of paintings and sculptures should be italicized, but photographs in quotation marks.
Art Series & Studio Naming
A series is a collection of art that conveys an idea. The theme connects the works.
To name an art studio, adding a keyword that aligns with your work can help buyers find you online.
Art Exhibitions
An art exhibition is the space in which art objects meet an audience. They may be called "exhibit", "exposition", or "show" in American English, while in UK English they are always called "exhibitions" or "shows".
An extreme example of an internal show is Karval Kon, a tiny full-participation convention run by Rose Beetem in Limon, CO. Friday evening is spent creating the artwork to be displayed. The artwork displayed is all by the members, by all the members, and all created on the spot.
Pay homage to an artistic influence as a good source for artwork titles.
