New Mexico refers to its sales tax as a Gross Receipts tax and when you register you will be issued a Combined Reporting System (CRS) ID number. There currently is no charge to apply for a New Mexico CRS number.

There are two ways to register for a permit in New Mexico, either by paper application or via the online website. We recommend submitting the application via the online website as it will generally be processed faster and you will receive a confirmation upon submission.
Required Documents
A Business Registration Application and the Form ACD-31015 Business Registration Worksheet are required for a New Mexico Sales Tax Permit application.
Filing Frequency
In New Mexico, you will be required to file and remit sales tax either monthly, quarterly, or semiannually. New Mexico sales tax returns are generally always due the 25th day of the month following the reporting period. If the filing due date falls on a weekend or holiday, sales tax is generally due the next business day.

Exempt Items
Physical property, such as furniture, household appliances, and automobiles, is subject to sales tax in New Mexico. Prescription drugs, food, and fuel are all free from sales tax.
How to Get a Sales Tax Number in New Mexico
You need a sales tax permit to comply with sales tax laws if your business operates in New Mexico and has a sales tax nexus. This applies whether you have a physical or an economic presence in the state.
CRS Number Application
To get a CRS number, apply online with the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department. You will receive confirmation within 1-2 days.
New Mexico Tax Account Numbers
In New Mexico, there are three registration numbers:
- Employer ID Number (EIN)
- Sales and Use Tax Report Number (TAN)
- Combined Reporting System Number (CRN)
The CRN is used for reporting Gross Receipts Tax.
