Coaching Philosophy and Approach
The main purpose is to provide a positive and fun experience for everyone. Activities will be taught through a team-oriented format, which emphasizes fun, teamwork and good sportsmanship. The players will be taught the basic fundamentals of baseball. The environment will be non-competitive and encouraging for all. In baseball, the main guy in charge is called the manager. Coaches assist in making lineups and substituting players. More than half a dozen coaches help the manager.
When I coach, I focus on the following key points:
- Praise commitment and grit that helped improve.
- Introduce yourself and assistants.
- Explain why you do certain things.
- Build confidence when players make mistakes.
- Focus on movements, not mechanics.
- Celebrate the process, not the outcome.
- Keep players moving and engaged.
The on-line library has resources to help you coach. Attend a clinic that covers fundamentals and decisions. Games last 5 innings or an hour. Players finish their turn at bat if time is called. Coaches umpire on defense to help coach. After 5 good pitches, the batter is out.

Surround yourself with assistants committed to developing young athletes and assemble a reliable staff sharing your passion for the game. Set clear expectations and rules up front. Requiring both players and coaches to wear helmets during games and practices is a must.
Kids at these ages start to love or dislike baseball depending on the coaches’ skills. Great coaches have expert knowledge of the sport and guide their players to a successful season through training, fundamentals and strategies, shaping their lives on and off the field.
Most coaches volunteer starting out and work their way up over time. While a degree is not required, it can help stand out when competing for jobs. Relevant areas of study include physical education, kinesiology, or sports management.
