Basics of Tree Pruning
Pruning helps trees grow strong, neat, and attractive. It involves removing damaged branches, promoting new growth, and shaping the tree. Cuts into a tree encourage new growth, and limbs should be cut correctly to avoid disease or damage.
Proper Tree Pruning Technique
-
Three-Cut Method:
- The first cut should be made underneath the branch, 6 to 12 inches away from the trunk.
- The second cut should be made 3 inches away from the first cut towards the end of the branch.
- Finally, cut the remaining stub back to the branch collar for proper healing.
-
Pruning Tools:
- Use pruning shears for small branches, loppers for mid-sized branches, and saws for larger branches.
General Rules in Pruning Trees
- Prune Weakest to Strongest Trees
- Use the 3-to-1 Ratio for Big Wood Removal
