Leotards, grips, and mats are some of the essential equipment you’ll need. Look for reliable sources to purchase or rent these items, ensuring you have everything you need to start your gymnastics journey. Balance, flexibility, strength, and coordination are the pillars of gymnastics.
Learning Gymnastics Skills
To do gymnastics, start by learning how to perform a forward somersault. Once you’ve mastered that, you can learn how to do a reverse somersault, cartwheel, handspring, and a roundoff. You can also try doing a pullover, roll, and front hip circle on a bar. While you’re learning these new skills, do things to improve your strength and flexibility on your own.
Starting Gymnastics No Matter the Age
While most professional gymnasts start training while they’re still children, it’s never too late to begin learning gymnastics. You may not be able to become an Olympic gymnast if you start as an adult, but you can still pick up some amazing skills at any age!
You can find gymnastics classes for children as young as 2 years of age, but many coaches say that it’s better to wait until your child is 5 or 6 before enrolling in a serious gymnastics program. For younger children, introductory classes should focus on developing body awareness and a love for the sport.
