Fertile Period of a Female Dog
The fertile period often begins about nine or ten days into a female dog’s heat cycle and lasts about five days.
Female Dog’s Heat Cycle
Female dogs normally bleed for around half of their heat cycle, which is usually 7 to 10 days. After about 9-10 days, the bleeding often becomes more watery or stops. This is when female dogs are often most fertile.
Reproduction of Dogs
- Once bleeding stops, the second stage of heat begins. This is when female dogs can become pregnant.
- Mating dogs remain "tied" or "locked" for about 15 minutes. They cannot be safely separated during this time without risking injury.
Male Dog’s Fertility
The reproductive lifespan of a male dog often starts around six months of age. Male dogs typically remain fertile throughout their lives. However, sperm quality and quantity may decrease with age, affecting fertility.
Duration of Dog’s Pregnancy
The pregnancy of a dog generally lasts about 63 days from fertilization.
