Applying for an EIN
- An EIN is a unique nine-digit ID number assigned by the IRS to businesses and organizations for tax purposes.
- You can apply for an EIN immediately online.
- If you apply by mail, it takes about 4-5 weeks. International applicants must call to apply.
- You need an EIN to file tax returns, make deposits, and open a bank account.
Obtaining an EIN
- An EIN is usually written in the form 00-0000000 to differentiate between the two.
- EINs do not expire once issued to an entity.
Approval Process and Time
- Whether you file your EIN application by telephone, mail, fax, or electronically, you’ll need to include information for the true principal officer, trustor, grantor, general partner, or owner.
- It usually takes one to two weeks to receive your EIN when you apply by fax.
- Applying by mail is the slowest method and it can take up to four weeks to obtain an EIN.
- Once your EIN is acquired, you can apply for business bank accounts and payment gateways.
