Animal Transport Certificate (ATC) Requirements
- The transporter must retain the completed animal transport certificate for 6 months after the journey.
- The certificate records origin, ownership, place of departure and destination, date and time of departure, and expected duration of the journey.
Transporter Authorisations and Requirements
- Type 1 authorisation is required for journeys under 8 hours, while Type 2 is for journeys over 8 hours.
- Renewal forms are available from the Animal and Plant Health Agency.
- Anyone transporting horses connected to an economic activity on journeys over 65km and under 8 hours must have a short journey transporter authorisation.
- Not renewing authorisations on time carries heavy penalties.
International Shipping and Health Requirements
- For international shipping, the minimum required documents are the Import Permit, Health Certification, and Shipper’s Certificate.
- Health certificates are required by law for any horse traveling out of state, valid for 6-12 months depending on destination.
- Current pictures or drawings of all markings and brands are also required.
- Animals must not suffer unduly, and means of transport must be appropriate for the species.
Safely Transporting Animals
- Dogs and cats should always be kept safely inside the car.
- Pets allowed to stick heads out of moving vehicles can be injured.
- Use carrying cages for small pets to keep them under control.
- Give plenty of rest stops for pets to exercise and eliminate.
