The CrossFit Open is a five-week long competition held annually. Athletes worldwide compete in the grueling workouts to advance through the stages of the CrossFit Games. The number advancing depends on the division and overall participation. Typically though, the top athletes in each region and division move forward.
Entry Requirements and Advancements
Entry fees are $20 worldwide, except Latin America and Africa where it’s $15. In North America and Europe, the top five teams per semi-final competition advance. For Oceania, the top three teams qualify. In Asia, the top two teams advance. CrossFit strives for gender parity but tends to skew slightly more male.
Preparation and Previous Season Highlights
Preparing for the 2024 Open requires building strength, endurance, flexibility and skills. In 2023, athletes from Russia and Belarus competed as neutral athletes due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The 2023 competition ran from February 16th to March 6th. Jeffrey Adler and Mal O’Brien won the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.
Livestream views and followers grew in 2023 versus 2022. Both maximum concurrent views and total 24-hour views increased for the final Open announcement. The 2023 quarterfinals registration was March 13th-17th, with competition from March 16th-19th. Invites are sent to qualifying athletes.
Looking Ahead: 2024 Changes
In 2024, the Open starts two weeks later on February 29th. More athletes will qualify for quarterfinals then – top 25% of individuals and teams per continent. The top 40 men and women and 30 teams per continent will advance to semi-finals. For age groups, the top 200 per division in quarters move on versus the top 30 last year.
