Jiro Ono, born in October 1925 in Tenryu, Shizuoka, Japan, opened his three Michelin star restaurant, Sukiyabashi Jiro, in 1965 in Ginza, Tokyo. The restaurant only has ten counter seats. His son Takashi manages a two-star branch at Roppongi Hills in Minato, Tokyo. Ono’s contributions to Japanese cuisine have been recognized with numerous awards. He is known for his meticulous attention to detail in the sushi-making process.
Omakase Tasting Menu at Sukiyabashi Jiro
The omakase tasting menu at Sukiyabashi Jiro costs around 30,000 yen ($270) per person, offering 20 pieces of sushi. Ono, 94, still works at the restaurant with his elder son. In 2023, his net worth is estimated to be $9 million, reflecting his hard work.
Presence in Michelin Guide and Legacy
Sukiyabashi Jiro is no longer listed in the Michelin Guide because it doesn’t accept reservations from the general public. However, Ono continues serving sushi well into his 90s with help from his eldest son Yoshikazu. Demand for seats means diners now need luxury hotel connections to get reservations.
