Shiva Kumar’s Inspiring Journey
Shiva Kumar is a 23-year-old engineering student from Banaswadi. He is the son of an illiterate mother and a father who was a truck driver. He started working as a newspaper delivery boy when he was in Class 6. The Rs 150 he would bring home was a huge relief for his debt-ridden family of four. Despite all the hard work his family members did, money was insufficient. So Shiva used to sell the newspapers while also studying hard.
On June 16, this newspaper-boy-turned-vendor will walk down the corridors of the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta as a PGP student. He cracked CAT 2012 and grabbed a seat in the premier business school. His uncle Krishna Veda Vyasa, who was once his newspaper customer, encouraged him to pursue higher studies.
Shiva’s Hard Work Pays Off
Come 4am, Shiva is up on his feet, stacking his bicycle with newspapers to deliver before sunrise – a habit since Class 6. His life is set to change now that this TOI vendor who cracked CAT 2012 has indeed grabbed an IIM seat. It sounds like a fairy tale, but the 23-year old who burnt the midnight oil has gained admission into the country’s most prestigious B-school.
