Do You Need a Permit?
If you’re living in Colorado and want to sell things or start a business, you’ll need to obtain a seller’s permit. This permit allows businesses to collect and remit sales tax.
Applying for a Sales Tax License
It costs $16 to apply for a Colorado sales tax license for in-state sellers. There’s also a $50 deposit that’s refunded once $50 in sales tax is paid. For out-of-state sellers, the permit is free when applying for a Retailer’s Use Tax License.
You can apply online via MyBizColorado or using the Sales Tax/Wage Withholding Account Application (CR 0100AP). We recommend submitting online for faster processing and confirmation.
If your Colorado business makes both retail and wholesale sales, the Retail Sales Tax License allows you to do both. You don’t need a separate Wholesale License.
Avoiding Penalties
Failure to properly register for a sales tax permit and collect/remit sales tax can result in fines, penalties, and legal issues. After starting your Colorado business, begin registering for a sales tax permit by gathering necessary information to ensure a smooth application. We recommend submitting online for faster processing and confirmation.
