Model Weight Standards and Guidelines
The CDC lists a healthy female weight, at average height, as being between 108-144 pounds. 87% of female models weighed between 100 and 150 pounds. Their suggestion is to prohibit agents from hiring models with a BMI below 18. By that standard, a 5-foot-9-inch model would need to weigh at least 122 pounds.
When it comes to modeling requirements, some model agencies are very strict while others are more flexible. The "golden range" for male model height seems to be 5’11 to 6’2. As for female models, height seems to be more important than weight within reason. Some successful petite models are 5’3 or under.
Societal Pressure and Body Positivity in Modeling
While there is pressure for models to be very slim, the modeling industry has been criticized for promoting unrealistic body ideals. Some models naturally have thin body types. But achieving and maintaining very low body weight can be unhealthy and dangerous. In recent years, body positivity and diversity are gaining traction. Overall a model’s health should be the priority over specific weight and height requirements.
Model Weight and Height Guidelines
Female runway models are usually a minimum of 5 feet, 9 inches tall. The standard height for male fashion models is 5 feet and 11 inches to 6 feet and 3 inches. Regarding weight, female models typically weigh between 90-120 pounds. Male models typically weigh between 120-170 pounds. This is lower than the healthy weight for most men and women.
