Utah Car Registration Process
Utah charges registration fees based on a vehicle’s weight. To register a car, visit your local DMV. You’ll need your registration, VIN inspection, driver’s license, proof of insurance and money for fees. Emissions and safety inspections may also be required.
- Registration for a passenger vehicle:
- Under 3 years old is $150.
- 3-6 years old is $110.
- 6-9 years old is $80.
- Over 9 years old is $45.
Passing Emissions in Utah
To pass emissions, make sure your vehicle’s oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, and EGR valve are working properly. Get regular tune-ups, change oil regularly and use quality gasoline.

- Utah charges a 6.85% sales tax on vehicle purchases.
- Title transfer fee is $6.
- Some dealers charge extra documentation fees around $149.
You must have insurance to register a vehicle in Utah. Registration is not tax deductible.
